Trailer: ‘The Lego Movie’ - Feb 7

Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, with the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Charlie Day, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.

Picking up serious ‘Toy Story’/’Wreck-It Ralph’ vibes from this. I don’t hate it.

There is nothing in my life more important than this at the moment.

My "Man of Steel" Review SPOILERS

I gave the movie an 8/10. The movie had out of this world expectations. The original “Superman” movie was done so perfectly that it was going to be difficult to achieve something that inspired you like that movie did.
Let’s take a time machine back to 1978 when the movie came out. “Batman” hadn’t come out yet and wouldn’t for another 10 years. Superheroes were not “trendy” and there were no other super hero movies to base the film off. It was a fresh genre that inspired every super hero movie since. Much like the creation of the character Superman inspired practically every superhero since. “Superman” inspired a whole new generation to push yourself to be the best you can be. The cast, the story, the classic John Williams score, it was the near perfect template every superhero movie, including Christopher Nolan’s dark Batman films, would use.
Clearly “Man of Steel” had large shoes to fill. For the most part, it did well. Hans Zimmer had a fantastic score that captured the mood in each scene. Henry Cavill did a fantastic job as Superman (and the small part we saw of Clark Kent.) Amy Adams was more believable as Lois Lane as I thought she would be, and Kevin Cosner was a perfect fit for Johnathan Kent, I just wish he had a bigger role. Diane Lane stole the scene every time she appeared as Martha Kent. Russell Crowe was a good fit as the Jor El the movie created. I liked the casting a lot. Especially Henry Cavill. He was Superman. It was good plot, and a great superhero movie. A great comic book movie.

Superman needs to be more though. Every superhero movie since Rami’s “Spiderman” has developed this trend of bringing these mythological characters to our world. It worked wonders for Marvel and Nolan’s Batman. That, however, is the difference between Batman and Superman. Superman is an alien. He is not of this world, he flies above it. The movie brought Superman to us, when it should have brought us up to him. It seemed like the filter on the lens darkened the movie, where Superman should embody light. I wanted an image of him saving a kid and the kid looks up to see who it is and he is there smiling at him with the sun shining down. We did not get that Superman. We got a Superman who trashed the half of Metropolis that wasn’t already trashed by the geo-morpher in his fight with Zod. Superman in the comics makes a conscious move to get out of the city if he is going to brawl with a titan. This was early Superman so maybe that is why he didn’t. He didn’t think to. But he is a man with morals, or so the movie said. Multiple. Times. Morals and hope. We were told he has those things. We were never really shown those things from him. For a character who is based on his character, we got very little. I liked the bar scene, but we needed more of that rather than things that showed he was an outcast. I think” Smallville” did an amazing job at balancing the fun farmer boy Clark Kent with the “I don’t fit in” Kal-El. It seemed as if they wanted to jump into the story too quickly. Superman isn’t about the plot. Superman is about the man. The plot should highlight that rather than warp the man around the plot. He killed Zod. Superman killed. I realize it was to save a family, but there were so many other options. And that is Superman. Being in a no win scenario and winning anyway (and not Captain Kirk style either.) I was really relieved that they showed it hurt him to do that, but it was unnecessary. The whole fight with Zod after the ship was sent to the Phantom Zone was unnecessary. Here it finally slows down. The climax is over, Superman saved the Earth. Kisses Lois (which seemed forced, and I even liked their chemistry). And then BOOM! here comes Zod for round 13 of 12 rounds. Why couldn’t Zod have been on that ship with the rest of them? I know he was renewing the Genesis project, but since nothing became of that, it felt weird. The pacing was very odd, what with the flashbacks going back and forth in age. I loved the flashbacks, they were, aside from the first sign of him with the suit on, my favorite parts of the movie. But it threw off the flow of the movie. Heck, when Zod simulated that thing in Clark’s (or Kal-El as he is more frequently called in the film) mind it took me a while to realize it was not a flashback.
Metropolis was devastated. We didn’t get a mournful Superman (other than over killing Zod,) we didn’t get a mournful city, we didn’t get a rebuilding city. There was no reaction to what happened to the place he calls home. I guess it was because they wanted that what seemed like hour long introduction part of the movie. We get it. Doomed planet. Desperate Parents. Last Hope.” I didn’t need to see a scientist kick a general’s butt in hand to hand combat. Even if it is Russell Crowe. Krypton was expanded upon far too much to be destroyed. Was I supposed to not notice that animal was very similar to the thing from Avatar?

The movie needed to be rated PG. We need kids to watch it. They buy the toys and watch…well I actually don’t know. I guess reruns of the Bruce Timm DC shows. The kids look up to the heroes. And the parents let them see it because it is Superman. This is the perfect opportunity to show this new generation of children what to aspire to be. They got death and destruction. They got a man who is supposed to be morally sound kill a man. I think Nolan and Snyder both underestimated the power and the importance Superman stand for. He stand for Truth Justice and the American Way. I gotta say, I did not get that feel from this movie. They need to read “Whatever Happened to Truth, Justice, and the American Way” actually. That comic explains exactly what was wrong with the Superman they attempted to form. I thought about it, and I think it is safe to say Nolan’s Batman joked more while in costume than Kal-El did altogether. I say Kal-El because Clark was a minor character and not focused on. Heck we only see him with the glasses on at the very end.

All of that and I still gave the movie a 8/10, though. It really is a great movie and does try to be Superman. The long fight scene was fantastic. The visual effects for the most part were top notch. The flying was magnificent, I may not have felt like I could fly after the movie, but watching those scenes I could imagine what it would feel like to do so. It just failed in some regards. I’m quite picky. I believe now that we have this foundation, we will get more of the Superman we are accustomed to. It was a refreshing feel, but there is much to work on. I think it needs a genius in desperate need of Rogaine, or a computer virus (or a combination of both, perhaps) for the next film. From where we are now, I guess we can only go Up, Up, and Away!

I saw Man of Steel last night at midnight and I have plenty to say about it! Overall? 9/10! I loved it! But it was far from perfect and there’s some genuine problems with it, but overall the good outweighs the bad for me. But there are some truly awesome things about the movie that I want to discuss too. I can’t wait to see it again.

Wow, whole heartily agree with everything. I’d give it an 8 rather than a 9 but still. Very good Superhero movie. It felt like they tried to combine an origin story and a sequel into one movie and it almost worked. I’m seeing it again.
